Palintest's customers
Palintest sells to a very wide range of users around the world, with half its business outside the UK. Water companies use our products for monitoring the quality of drinking water, and to monitor sewerage works and effluent streams. Industry of all types use our equipment for testing process waters, boiler water testing , and for effluent analysis. We also have a sizeable customer base in the leisure market for the testing of swimming pools, spas, aquariums and ponds.

Continuous Innovation and Development
Palintest aims to maintain its market lead by continually developing existing and new product lines. In recent years, we have developed a unique range of chemical sensors which provide rapid heavy metal analysis in situ, and from this research introduced a range of instruments for determining low levels of lead in drinking water. This technique has achieved EPA approval in the USA and been accepted as equivalent to the long established AA methods for analysis. This approval is unique for non-US companies.

Other recent product innovations include test specific single and dual parameter photometers for Chlorine Dioxide and other disinfectants, and a new range of tests for heavy metals in effluents.

Although now trading under the name 'Palintest Ltd' the company was previously named 'Wilkinson & Simpson Ltd'.

The origin of the company can be traced back to about 1870 when Wilkinson became involved in an apothecary business in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

In 1875, Wilkinson was joined by Simpson and they commenced a wholesale business. This business continued to strive and develop in Newcastle Upon Tyne and eventually became a manufacturing chemist and pharmaceutical wholesaling business.

This business continued to the 1950's when the company was approached by Dr Thomas Palin, a water scientist and chemist of world renown whose achievements included the development of breakpoint chlorination for water and the invention of the DPD method for the determination of chlorine in drinking water. This method was patented by Dr Palin and became the standard method of chlorine determination throughout the world. The DPD method has been approved by the US EPA for determination of chlorine in drinking water. Dr Palin also developed a system of chemical reagents presented in a form of reagent tablets and intended for use in the determination of other chemical constituents of drinking water. He approached Wilkinson and Simpson Ltd to manufacture the reagent tablets and eventually Dr Palin and the company formed a partnership. Eventually Wilkinson and Simpson Ltd became sole owners of the tablet reagent system developed by Dr Palin. Dr Palin became a consultant to the company. During the 1970's the pharmaceutical and wholesaling and manufacturing business was sold and the company's business became exclusively that of chemical reagent manufacture.

In 1983, the company Wilkinson and Simpson Ltd was purchased by a British Corporation, Halma plc and considerable investment was made in Wilkinson and Simpson to improve the manufacture of its tablet reagent system and to develop a complete range of analytical equipment to be used in association with the reagent tablets. The reagents were marketed under the brand name 'Palintest'.

The company was renamed 'Palintest Ltd' in May 1989 to reflect both its registered trademark and its association with Dr Palin, the father of the DPD method.
